A Long Distance Educational Affair
Distance learning is what the name implies. It is the receiving an education, of any type, with an amount of distance between the student and the teacher. We all know this as online training and e-learning because of all the technological advancements in our world today. Learning can be done with great distance between the teacher and the student today, largely due to computers and the internet
What is interesting is that distant learning actually started back in the 1700’s. This is when an advertisement was placed in the Boston Gazette newspaper requesting students that would be sent lessons on a weekly basis. The distance learning courses that were offered later in the 1800’s, for example, involved the teaching of shorthand. When the United States Post Office came into existence in the 19th century, education was being taught from coast to coast, literally! It caught on and has never been stronger than it is today!
Anyone can benefit from distance learning courses because of the variety of courses you can study and by schools providing the courses. Have you ever wanted to study genetics as part of health sciences? What about accounting or business computer applications? Do you need a brush up course on your writing skills? Is architecture or law something that interests you? As you can see, the variety of distance learning courses is vast which makes finding the course you want to study easy.
Now, what makes distance learning different from actual online training is the fact that even though it is done online, in most cases, the schedule of the school providing the courses is followed. This is not a learn at your own pace program. People with great time management skills and the desire to achieve, are best suited for this type of learning program. You must be very self motivated to follow this way of studying because it, fortunately, allows for a more flexible schedule than a campus setting, but you can not allow yourself to become too relaxed. Admission testing may be required before being accepted into a distance learning program just as admission testing is required before being accepted onto a campus.
As you can see, the education you are looking for is available to you by way of a long distant education, but you need to ask yourself if you are willing to be focused and disciplined enough to follow though.
